The technology and vision powering TrueFullstaq Cloud
We recently announced the launch of TrueFullstaq Cloud: our 100% sovereign Dutch private cloud solution. But what's really behind this launch? What drove us to build this platform, and how does it actually work? But more importantly: what's in it for you?
Our Head of Technology, Marijn de Vlieger, takes you behind the scenes in this six-part video series, revealing the technical innovations, strategic thinking, and customer-centric approach that shaped TrueFullstaq Cloud.
Why cloud sovereignty became front-page news
"Many companies are now thinking about cloud sovereignty for the first time, but it's not actually a really new discussion." So why is everyone talking about it now?
Marijn reveals something that might surprise you: this conversation has been brewing for half a decade, driven by legislation like the Patriot Act and Cloud Acts that allow American companies potential access to overseas data. What changed? Recent geopolitical developments have made this impossible to ignore.
The convenience of hyperscalers (pay by the minute, scale infinitely, build an MVP for cents) led to them becoming the default infrastructure for everyone. But that convenience came with hidden dependencies that organizations are now questioning: who actually controls your data?
This has sparked the rise of sovereign cloud: infrastructure that operates within your national borders and under your jurisdiction. But here's where it gets interesting: sovereign doesn't automatically mean private. You can have public sovereign solutions shared by multiple customers, or private sovereign infrastructure dedicated to your organization alone. Different approaches, different benefits. At TrueFullstaq, our private cloud is sovereign by default – but let's explore what that actually means in practice.
The private cloud revolution
And hasn't private cloud always been around? Yes, but what's possible today would have been science fiction a decade ago.
As Marijn explains, we've moved far beyond simple virtualization. Today's private clouds offer infrastructure as code, containerization, and automatic scaling: capabilities that were exclusive to hyperscalers just years ago. But now you're not dealing with just three companies running the entire cloud.
The evolution is remarkable: from basic virtualized hosts to platforms that can launch VMs with the same ease as public clouds, but with one crucial advantage: you maintain control over every layer of the stack.
Performance that surprises
Worried that private cloud can't match hyperscaler performance? The benchmarks might surprise you.
Marijn shares concrete data: TrueFullstaq Cloud actually outperforms average Azure, AWS, and Google Cloud platforms. Faster CPU, faster memory, and a guarantee that your data stays exactly where you put it within Dutch datacenters, managed by Dutch and European teams and partners.
But it's not just about raw performance. It's about having a partner who understands Dutch compliance requirements, Dutch business practices, and can guarantee your data never leaves the country, not even "accidentally" routing through Ireland or Germany.
Beyond infrastructure: true partnership
What happens after you sign the contract? This is where most cloud providers disappear, but TrueFullstaq gets uncomfortably close.
"We try to really get intimate with our customers to the point where it might get a little uncomfortable," Marijn says. But this deep understanding drives everything: from pre-sales solution architecture to ongoing optimization.
The questions aren't just technical (Do you need Kubernetes? Which database engines?) Instead, they're business-focused: When are your sales peaks? What's your roadmap? How can we help you gain a competitive edge? Because choosing a cloud isn't just a technical decision, it's about total cost of ownership and long-term partnership.
Technical innovation: learning from a decade of experience
What did we learn from building Highlander, and how did that shape TrueFullstaq Cloud? The answer involves some hard-won lessons about performance versus scalability.
Highlander was built for pure speed: the fastest CPUs, fastest servers, fastest local SSD storage. But that came with limits like eight CPU maximum per VM, and the constant risk of data loss if hardware failed.
TrueFullstaq Cloud represents a complete evolution: AMD processors running at 4GHz (three times faster than before), scaling up to 100 cores per physical machine, enterprise-grade NVMe storage over 100-gigabit networks. Resulting in better performance without the old limitations.
But here's what Marijn is most proud of: it's built entirely with open source components, ensuring no vendor lock-in and true technological independence.
True sovereignty vs. "sovereign washing"
Not all "sovereign" clouds are created equal. Some companies have a very different definition of sovereignty than others.
A prospective customer put it perfectly when evaluating sovereign cloud options: "I'm being offered a solution by someone who runs their infrastructure in an American data center, uses American hardware, American software, and then calls it sovereign because they put it in Amsterdam."
That's not how TrueFullstaq does it. Dutch-owned datacenters, open source technology stack, Dutch and European staff and partners. Your data stays in Dutch hands, with no non-sovereign parties interfering with your infrastructure.
But ultimately, it's not just about where your servers are located, it's about having a partner who truly understands your business, available 24/7, focused on reducing your total cost of ownership rather than selling you more infrastructure.
The choice is yours
TrueFullstaq Cloud represents more than just another hosting option. It's a response to the fundamental question of our digital age: who controls your data, and do you trust them with your business?
In an era where data sovereignty has moved from tech blogs to national headlines, where geopolitical tensions affect technology choices, and where compliance requirements continue to evolve, having a truly sovereign cloud partner isn't just nice to have. It's strategic necessity.
