Adopting Cloud-Native at Route.nl

Slow-paced routes, fast-paced platform

Route.nl's journey from legacy to reliability

Route.nl, a platform enabling people to find, create, and share walking and cycling routes across the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany, faced critical stability issues. Developers lived in constant fear of unexpected crashes, which happened frequently, preventing them from enjoying their own time outdoors during holidays.

When Route.nl called us for help, we discovered years of accumulated legacy systems built with good intentions but no longer sustainable. The challenge was significant: to leverage Kubernetes' automation capabilities, TrueFullstaq and Route.nl needed to completely rebuild the entire application stack from the ground up, transforming their infrastructure to ensure reliability and peace of mind for both users and developers alike.

Getting Route.nl on track with Kubernetes

Maintaining the Route.nl platform was challenging, unclear, and demanding. It didn’t take the developers at Route.nl and the TrueFullstaq engineers long to agree on containerization through Kubernetes. The AWS cloud was already in use and was a great foundation to build upon.

To free Route.nl of the monolithic and aged application set, the combined team set out to automate everything that could be automated. We created an automated build process, integrated proper and reproducible deployment pipelines, and implemented self-healing.

The new platform is stable and only allows for planned downtime. Route.nl’s developers are no longer putting out fires; they now use short feedback loops to improve their platform continuously.
